Pets and IAQ

As everyone knows, pets are often part of the family. But Fluffy, Fido, and any other animals you live with can also wreak havoc on the HVAC system in your Spring City, Pennsylvania, home. With a few simple fixes, you can keep the air flowing freely in your home without having to give up your furry friends.

Clogged Filters

The filters in your heating and cooling system help keep allergens and contaminants out of the ducts and chambers. But when you have pets, particularly those with long hair, the filters tend to get clogged very quickly. The result is hair and dander entering the system and decreasing the overall air quality in your home.

But there’s an easy fix. Just change the filters in your system more often. Pet owners can expect to swap out the filters about once a month. You may want to opt for a filter with a higher MERV rating as well. The MERV scale is just a way of rating a filter’s effectiveness.

Dirty Ducts

When pet hair and dander gets into the ducts, it lowers the efficiency of the system dramatically. You may notice a spike in your heating and cooling bills, or people in your home might suffer from allergic symptoms. Regular duct cleaning and sanitizing by an HVAC technician will help with this issue.

Damaged Components

If you ignore the dirty ducts or never change the filter, you could face more serious and expensive problems down the road. When the components within your furnace or air conditioner have to run at lower efficiency levels, they tend to get worn out a lot faster. This means you’ll end up having to repair or replace the specific components, which isn’t cheap. Sometimes components can be damaged beyond repair, requiring a complete replacement of the HVAC system.
