water heater

Tankless water heaters are popular for their fuel efficiency despite their high upfront costs. These heaters provide endless hot water and require less space than traditional tank heaters, meaning they leave more available storage space in the basement or utility closet. Here are some considerations to keep in mind as you shop for a new water heater for your King of Prussia home.

Initial Costs

According to Energy Star, gas-powered tankless heaters can save an average of $95 a year on energy costs or $1,800 over its lifetime, versus traditional tank heaters. Even though tankless heaters save money in the long run, though, they are more expensive to purchase and install. Prices range roughly from $1,000 for an electric whole-house model to $3,000 for a gas-powered version. A 40-gallon tank heater will cost roughly $600 to buy and install.

It’s worth noting some homes with electric-only utilities may need an electric system upgrade before an electric tankless heater can be added, so consult with an electrician before proceeding with this option.

Multitasking

A traditional tank heater gives your household the ability to run the dishwasher, wash the laundry, and use the shower all at the same time. Unfortunately, you cannot do this with a standard household tankless water heater due to the flow rate it’s designed to handle.

The Infamous Cold-Water Sandwich

Hot water faucets and showers served by tankless heaters suffer from a nuisance condition known as the cold-water sandwich. Between hot water heating sessions, cold water sits in the pipes on the way to its destinations. As hot water comes through the shower head, a surprise blast of cold water often pours out, and then it will return to hot water. Adding a tank will resolve the problem, but this will greatly reduce the efficiency of the tankless heater and increase its utility cost.
