When you wake up in the morning, one of the things that can really mess up your day is discovering that your water heater is broken. This can be especially true for people with families, as one family member after another painfully finds out that the water coming out of the shower is ice cold.

However, there are signs that you can watch out for to help you avert a water heater breakdown. Courtesy of New Age Air, your source for geothermal heating in Chester Springs, have a look at some of our tips for identifying a water heater at risk for going on the fritz.

  1. Your unit is old

You can figure out your water heater’s exact age by looking up the serial number on the manufacturer’s sticker near the heater’s top. Usually, the first two numbers will represent the year, but make sure to double-check the manufacturer’s website to be certain. If it’s more than ten years old, there’s a good chance it needs replacing.

  1.  The water is rusty

If your hot water is starting to show rust, it may be because your water heater is rusting on the inside. To test your hot water for rust, fill three or four 5-gallon buckets or other containers. If rust is only coming from the hot water, you most likely need a new water heater.

  1. You don’t have enough hot water

Over time, sediment can build up in hot water heaters, which can separate water from the source of heat. In turn, this will often cause your hot water to run out before you’ve even finished your shower. Sediment build-up on the tank’s bottom can also cause your water heater to make loud rumbling noises.

Whatever the exact cause, if your water heater seems to always run out of hot water, you’re probably due for an update.
